Car Lubrication System 101

This is a basic intro to you ride's lubrication system.

The need for a lubrication system for your car is obvious. If you'll think back to 4th grade science class, friction is simply when two things rub against each other. This produces heat. People don't rub their hands together in the winter for nothing. Your car's lubrication system limits the amount of friction between parts, thus reducing wear and tear.

Your oil is stored in your oil pan which is located on the bottom of your engine, or cylinder block. Crankcase or oil sump are alternate names for your oil pan. When you crank your ride, your oil pump draws oil from the oil pan and directs it through oil galleries. Oil galleries direct the oil to your engine's moving parts. Your oil goes through the oil filter before it goes through your engine.
